About DocBetter
What DocBetter is
DocBetter is a small, independent website of free, browser-based text and document tools, plus a museum on the history of writing and print. There are no accounts and no subscriptions to sign up for, no software to install, and nothing that leaves your browser — the site itself is supported by advertising.
The tools
Six tools live here: the Word Counter, Character Counter, Case Converter, Reading Time Calculator, Lorem Ipsum Generator, and Text Slug Generator. Between them they cover most of the small, repetitive jobs that come up while drafting, editing, and publishing text.
How they work
Every tool runs entirely in your browser. The Word Counter tallies words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs as you type and estimates how long the text takes to read and to say aloud; the Character Counter checks your text’s length against tweet, meta description, SMS, and SEO title limits with a live remaining count; the Case Converter applies the rules for UPPERCASE, lowercase, Title Case, Sentence case, camelCase, PascalCase, snake_case, kebab-case, and CONSTANT_CASE; and the Text Slug Generator folds accents to plain letters, strips punctuation, and swaps spaces for a hyphen or underscore.
Where the numbers come from
The Reading Time Calculator, and the reading-time estimate built into the Word Counter, both use an adjustable words-per-minute figure — reading speed varies from person to person, so you can set your own pace instead of trusting one fixed default. The limits in the Character Counter reflect each platform’s published length limit at the time the tool was built; platforms change these occasionally, so treat the count as a close estimate rather than a live lookup.
The museum
The Writing & Print Museum is a separate part of the site: galleries on writing instruments from quill to typewriter, the printing press and movable type, paper and documents, and the libraries and archives that keep them. Every entry, image, and fact there is drawn from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, with sourcing noted in the museum itself.
Straight talk about ads & advice
DocBetter is advertising-supported — that’s how the tools and museum stay free to use. Nothing on this site is professional legal, compliance, or data-security advice; the tools produce estimates from what you type in, and results can vary from your actual document. Verify anything that matters — a contract, a compliance filing, a client deliverable — with a qualified professional before relying on it. DocBetter is not affiliated with X (formerly Twitter), Google, or any other platform whose limits a tool references.
More to read
Alongside the tools, the blog and learn section cover writing, formatting, and document topics in more depth.
